چکیده

We present a processing model that integrates some important psychological claims about the human sentence parsing mechanism, namely that processing is innuenced by limitations on working memory and by various syntactic preferences. The model uses time-constraint information to resolve connicting preferences in a psychologically plausible way. The starting point for this proposal is the Sausage Machine model (Frazier and Fodor, 1978; Fodor and Frazier, 1980). From there, we attempt to overcome the original model's dependence on ad hoc aspects of its grammar, and its omission of verb-frame preferences. We also add mechanisms for lexical disambiguation and semantic processing in parallel with syntactic processing.

Automatic identification of words with semantic roles (such as Agent, Patient, Source, etc.) in sentences and attaching correct semantic roles to them, may lead to improvement in many natural language processing tasks including information extraction, question answering, text summarization and machine translation. Semantic role labeling systems usually take advantage of syntactic parsing and th...

Elementary trees for syntactic and statistical disambiguation

STATISTICAL DISAMBIGUATION Rodolfo Delmonte, Luminita Chiran, Ciprian Bacalu Ca' Garzoni-Moro, San Marco 3417 Università "Ca Foscari" 30124 VENEZIA Tel. 39-41-2578464/52/19 E-mail: [email protected] Website: http//byron.cgm.unive.it ABSTRACT In this paper we argue in favour of an integration between statistically and syntactically based parsing, where syntax is intended in terms of shallow parsi...

A model of syntactic disambiguation based on lexicalized grammars

This paper presents a new approach to syntactic disambiguation based on lexicalized grammars. While existing disambiguation models decompose the probability of parsing results into that of primitive dependencies of two words, our model selects the most probable parsing result from a set of candidates allowed by a lexicalized grammar. Since parsing results given by the lexicalized grammar cannot...

Towards a Tight Integration of Syntactic Parsing with Semantic Disambiguation by means of Declarative Programming

We propose and advocate the use of an advanced declarative programming paradigm – answer set programming – as a uniform platform for integrated approach towards syntax-semantic processing in natural language. We illustrate that (a) the parsing technology based on answer set programming implementation reaches performance sufficient for being a useful NLP tool, and (b) the proposed method for inc...

An improved joint model: POS tagging and dependency parsing

Dependency parsing is a way of syntactic parsing and a natural language that automatically analyzes the dependency structure of sentences, and the input for each sentence creates a dependency graph. Part-Of-Speech (POS) tagging is a prerequisite for dependency parsing. Generally, dependency parsers do the POS tagging task along with dependency parsing in a pipeline mode. Unfortunately, in pipel...
